Picture, taken on October 6, 2023, shows the 121-metre long cargo ship "Canopee", The Canopée is a 121-metre-long cargo ship propelled by gigantic sails. She is currently in Bordeaux and is due to load parts for the Ariane 6 rocket, bound for French Guiana. With its four 37-metre-high masts, the French vessel Canopée has a sail area of 1,500 square metres. Thanks to the combined power of its engines and the wind, this hybrid cargo ship will transport elements of the Ariane 6 rocket to French Guiana. The 121-metre vessel is manned by 11 crew members, who reported fuel savings of between 15% and 30% during trials. For its French owner, the Canopée is a precursor of less carbon-intensive maritime freight. Its large, rigid, two-part wings have their origins in aeronautics and ocean racing. A welcome innovation, given that 3 to 4% of greenhouse gases are generated by maritime traffic.Photo by Thibaud Moritz/ABACAPRESS.COM
